Brittany is made up of 4 departments: Finistère (Dept. 29), Cotes d’Amor (Dept. 22), Ille et Vilaine (Dept. 35) and Morbihan (Dept. 56) and is a land rich in culture, tradition and history. The region consists of a combination of spectacular (750-mile) coastline, historic towns, magical islands (including the striking beauty of Gavrinish Island) and inland woods. Brittany was a Celtic duchy for more than one thousand years before its annexation to France in 1532 and Breton and Gallo, (the ancient languages of this Celtic province) are still spoken in some areas.
The largest cities are Nantes, Rennes and Brest and with the exception of Rennes all the main cities are located on the coast. The towns of Dinan, Dinard and St. Malo are a must to visit for any tourist.
